The beverage industry has stringent specifications for liquid sugar and medium invert sugar. The ash spec is extremely low even though many of the other ingredients used in beverages are much higher in ash than the sugar such as vitamins, minerals, tea, fruits or milk. The specs remain even though removing ash is water and energy intensive.
