It Takes a Village

Ten years ago, Raízen was the first company in the world to certify one of its operational units with the Bonsucro Standard. With support from Bonsucro and other stakeholders invested in sustainability, its Maracaí Mill in São Paulo State, Brazil, successfully passed the audit against the first version of the Bonsucro Production Standard.

Since then, the Raízen group has gone on to certify 22 of its 23 operating mills in Brazil and has a goal of achieving 100% Bonsucro certification in the years to come.

Through our Bonsucro Chain of Custody Certification, we purchase raw cane sugar milled by Raizen to meet the sustainable sourcing needs of many of our major Sugaright customers. CSC Sugar is proud of its trading relationship with Raizen as we both share the goal of assuring that all cane sugar is grown in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.

About Raizen

Founded in 2011 as a joint venture between Cosan and Shell, Raizen was created to promote sustainable practices in its business units. The company is a global leader in the production and distribution of renewable energy and cane sugar to all parts of the world. The Raízen Foundation benefits more than 100,000 people per year in the regions of operation, invests in reducing loss time incident frequency, co-generation plants, improves its biological control of pests and has implemented a Sustainable Development Policy.

About Bonsucro

Bonsucro is a voluntary international certification that aims to ensure sustainability in the sugar, ethanol, and bioenergy sector in order to guarantee high economic, environmental, and social criteria across the entire sugarcane and ethanol cultivation process. They have over 550 members from more than 50 countries to address critical challenges in the sugarcane sector and drive both performance and impact through multi-stakeholder engagement. From civil society to farmers to global food companies, all voices have a seat the table.

As of the end of 2021 over 130 mills across the world have achieved Bonsucro certification. These mills produced 75 million metric tons of certified sugar in 2020. This certified sugar is purchased by global brands committed to meeting the demands of consumers who care about the environmental and social impact of the food they eat.

The Village: CSC Sugar, Raizen and Bonsucro

CSC Sugar has been an active member of Bonsucro since 2012, serving alongside Raizen on the Board of Directors and the Members Council to develop strategy and to assure a credible and pragmatic standard. As more and more of our Sugaright refining customers require a sustainability certification, we have increased the amount of Bonsucro certified sugar we buy every year including from Raizen.

We look forward to continuing this sustainability journey together.

And congratulations Raizen!
