Is Your Supply Chain Caught in the Cold?

The recent snow and ice storm that impacted the US from Dallas to Maine once again affirms the benefits of Sugaright’s micro-refinery strategy: LOCAL, ENERGY EFFICIENT, and PROACTIVE.

The storm exposed the vulnerability of outdated supply chains in extreme weather. As the storm shut down major trucking routes and restricted access to critical natural resources, the ripple effects spread quickly- delaying shipments, depleting inventories, and causing factory slowdowns, which rapidly cascaded into missed retail deadlines and lost revenue. Climate-driven disruptions are now routine stress tests, and sustainable, resource-efficient supply chains are less vulnerable to the energy, labor, material, and logistics constraints that these storms create.

LOCAL

The majority of the U.S.’s sugar refining assets reside in coastal geographies or growing regions to support easy access to raw materials, but complicated, lengthy supply chains to get the sugar to their customers. For industrial users operating on lean, just-in-time models, even a few days of disruption can have outsized consequences. Sugaright was established in response to an industrial user’s request for a closer, more reliable sugar supplier. Since then, we’ve grown our micro-refinery network to not only efficiently supply customers from the deep Southwest to the far Northeast, but also provide supply continuity assurance, allowing orders to shift seamlessly to the nearest refinery when needed.

ENERGY EFFICIENT

Apart from road conditions, severe winter weather threatens supplies of natural resources that manufacturers need to operate. Because of Sugaright’s sustainable refining process, the consumption of gas and electricity is minimal and therefore, less subject to disruptions in energy delivery.

PROACTIVE

Our refineries were able to produce through the storm, and our customer service network worked closely with our customers and freight partners to ensure that critical needs were safely met.

Our customer service teams were proactively working with customers almost a week before the storm, to plan for success rather than just be a victim of weather circumstances.  As road conditions proved challenging during this storm, we worked with our valued carrier partners to keep their drivers as safe as possible and to prioritize loads to keep our customers’ plants running. Finally, the ability of our customers to remotely access the live location and ETA of their sucrose loads facilitated operational planning.
